Eden's Despicable "3" Birthday Party

I'm THREE!
This year’s theme was a no-brainer for us.  Mr E has always loved Despicable Me 2, and after his minion cupcakes last year, has been asking for a minion birthday party since.

I really don’t know what it is about this time of year, but it feels like his birthday comes from nowhere.  Lacking free weekends and with only a week to go, I had to pull the party together!  My lunch times were spent raiding the dollar and local party shop for anything yellow and blue or could be turned into a minion.  And there wasn’t much sleep in the lead up… yawn… Zzzz.  Whaaat? Oh! Still writing here… Whew!  I sure am glad it’s over… for another whole year.  {Eloise will skip a 6th birthday celebration as we will be at The Happiest Place on Earth instead}

I found these hats on a Girls’ Day Out at The Rocks Markets.   Unfortunately they didn’t stay on their heads for very long.  Eden’s shirt “Big Trouble in a Little Shirt” was on clearance for $3 {and so the minion personality}

As I said previously, decorating was inexpensive thanks to a good dollar store; $1 for streamers,  $4 for a bag of 25 balloons, and $2.50 for a yellow lantern.  The most expensive item was a minion tablecloth and banner for $9 each.
I found free minion goggle printables to create these minions

I placed a few minion friends (thanks McDonald's) around the house too.

Salsa & Salsa
The menu was inspired by El Macho’s restaurant from the movie.  Luckily Mr E’s favourite dinners are also Taco Tuesday/ Thursday (depending on which day we have it but not both.  That’s overkill).  Mr H was excited to finally have his taco bar at a birthday party.  It was surprisingly easy and tasty too.

We Like to Party
The minions love to play games!  We played Pass the Parcel and had the most awesome piñata ever.

Pass the Parcel
Each layer contained a lollipop and minion goodie
(sticker sheet, paper goggles or party blower)
The grand prize was real minion goggles!

Seriously, how cute is this piñata?
Get it Eden!
They also had some play time in and outdoors.  Unfortunately it was cold, but fortunately the rain held out on us and it only sprinkled lightly.

He’s not perfect but Mr E knew exactly who he was and that’s all that matters, right?  I spent most of Friday baking the layers and Saturday, my aim was to decorate however I didn’t get to it until about 9:30pm (post- The White Album concert and a few cocktails).  2 hours later and he was done.  And less than 24 hours later, he was devoured!

Make a wish!

Unfortunately there are no photos of us as a family due to Eden deciding "no more photos" and putting his arm over his face.  As soon as the camera was put away "Na-na-na-na!  You couldn't get me!"  Sigh.

You’re One in a Minion!
WHAAT?  The party's over?
Our guests took home a little minion “surprise” (Despicable Me 2 character figurine), a Lipstick Taser (coconut, mango, banana and vanilla- flavoured chapstick), Freeze Ray (water squiter), a minion tattoo and sweets.  Again, inexpensive thanks to a clearance at Toysrus, buying out the $1 bins at Kmart, and of course, chocolate in bulk at Costco.

At the end of the day, we asked Eden if he enjoyed his party.  His reply “it was awesome!”  That means we can call it a success!

Thanks for coming!

  1. It was awesome. You did a great job, Bec. And he loved it so it was worth the effort!
