If the chocolate melts in your hands, you are eating it too slowly... April.

Here we are, 4 months into 2014 already.  April was a busy month with MissE finishing off her first school term, Easter and Anzac Day, and a camping trip too.

April Fools’ Day
At the ripe age of 5, I thought it was a good time to introduce practical jokes to MissE with the ol’ biscuit switcheroo.  She didn’t quite get it but hey, I tried.
Biscuit switch - I switched the contents of her cookies & crackers

Playgroup
We checked out a new park with the playgroup this month.  They had a great play until the skies opened.  Gotta love April.

The Great Outdoors
We went on our first family camping trip this month.  You can read about here.  Trust me it's a good!

Let’s Go Outdoors!
For most of April we had beautiful summer-esque weather.  During Easter weekend, we visited Bobbin Head in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and Chinamen’s Beach in Middle Harbour (Mosman) for some sunshine.

Bobbin Head
A gorgeous little spot... we packed a picnic and our fishing rods for the day.  We didn’t end up fishing with the numerous walks (Gibberagong Track / Mangrove Boardwalk ) and HUGE playground on offer.

End of Term
She did it!  She made it through her first term of school.  She spent most of her holidays with OSCH.  They did lots of fun activities – bowling, Big Blast, and mini-golf with a few themed days in-centre as well.  I wasn’t jealous at all.  She also had a sleepover at her cousins’ house.

Unfortunately she spent much of school holidays fighting a cough which is still lingering at time of writing.

Yellow Belt
Eloise has another belt!  This time, yellow.  Go MissE!

Eden is proud of his Jie-jie

MissE Says the Darnedest Things
Yes, we do.
Mr H took both on a field trip to IKEA for inspiration (all will be revealed, hopefully in May) and meatballs.  I always say the IKEA and the supermarket play the best music (guess I’ve gotten old?)
MrE: Stops in his tracks.  I hear “Let It Go!”
MissE: Singing loudly. “The snow glows white on the mountain tonight, Not a footprint to be seen, A kingdom of isolation, And it looks like I’m the queen”
Woman A: Turns and smiles.
MissE: “The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside, Couldn’t keep it in, heaven knows I tried”
Woman B: Your daughter has a wonderful voice.
MissE: What did she say, daddy?
Daddy: She said you sound just like Elsa.
MissE: SEE!  I TOLD you I sound just like HER.  And you think I don’t!

MrE
Representing NORCAL
It was an up and down month for Mr E.  On the ‘Up’, his speech is fantastic and he is also very polite.  He always says “please”, even when it’s a no.  “No, please”.  We rarely have to ask him to correct him when asking for something; always “Can I please… Can you please…”
MrE: Daddy, where is mama?
Daddy: Upstairs
MrE: What is she doing?
Daddy: I don’t know.
MrE: Can I go upstairs to see, please?

Unfortunately it means that him and Jie-jie get into arguments quite a bit.  They usually end in him saying “BLAH BLAH BLAH” to her because he is simply tired of listening to her talk.  That makes us laugh.
And he is up for a good laugh.  A bit of a back-story on this one, MissE couldn’t pronounce “boobies” for a long time and she always said “doodies” so…
MissE: Mama, today was the first day Mrs.H didn’t have duties.
Me: Sorry, WHAT?! (given the back-story)
MissE: She usually has playground duties and didn’t have them today.
In the background, we hear a little person “Hee hee hee hee”.
MrE: Jie-jie said “doodies”.

The ‘Down’ MrE does not like to stay in bed.  He is definitely not as bad as Eloise was… I shudder thinking back.  Without fail, he gets up 30- 45 minutes after going to bed.  It’s usually because he needs to use the toilet (which is good) but seriously, the kid just went (before and after bath).

Me
Yay!  Date night… Soft-shell crab & papaya salad and an Australian advanced screening of Divergent.  I enjoyed the movie so much; I didn’t even mind the teen girls clapping every time Four and Tris touched.
{MissE and MrE were thrilled to have Miss Charli babysitting them too.}
Our favourite dish: soft-shell crab & papaya salad
I spent most of April with a man cold.  I am happy I had the flu shot because this cold was a bad one and with horrible timing, I had an event on at work which meant that there was no rest for me!  I am finally just feeling back to normal in the 2nd week of May.  Here’s to May being a healthy month in our house!

Crafternoon
As we settle into 2014, one of my on-going and now long-term goals (I’ve had this goal since Eden was born!) has been to clean up my craft room.  As I have started clear my pile of the kids artwork (which I photograph and turn into photo books), I found wedding photos (ahem, 9 years ago), house building photos (this one is okay since we are still working on it… just been in for 5 years), and nearly completed baby books.  It’s a big task ahead but pleased that I am finally completing a few sewing projects here and there like this wet bag.

Reversible Pinafore for Baby Gabriella Sol
(love her name).  Her mum is a British ex-pat
so the neon double-decker buses and Beefeaters
were perfect!
Finally done… sock monkey fabric and a shower curtain
(PVC is expensive!)

Until next time…

A Camping We Will Go!

It was a long time coming and finally here – our first camping adventure as a family!*  We teamed up with the P Family for the weekend.  As Miss E’s first school term came to a close, we packed up the car the very next day, on a very rainy Saturday, bound for Huskisson (approximately 2.5 hours).

We were disappointed we didn’t get a campsite in the national park as recommended, but this campsite worked out well.  It was quiet, only our tents and 1 other site occupied.  There was wildlife aplenty with kookaburras and bunnies.

Setting up camp in the rain!
On arrival, Uncle J and Cousin D were frantically setting up camp as there was a break in the rain.  And luckily it was snack time during a big downpour.  By the time our tent was up, the rain had finally stopped so we took the opportunity to stroll to the nearby creek (Moona Moona Creek).
All set!  (Eden's class mascot, Ellie, came camping too)
Cousin cuddles!

As night fell, we had a tent dinner (the rain returned) and played a few rounds of UNO until bedtime.  It was an interesting night with all of us crammed into our little tent and the rain pounding on what sounded like very thin nylon.  Luckily there were no leaks and when we awoke, the sun decided to come out.  Yay!
Fun with glow sticks before dinner
Day 2: Hello Sunshine.
Thank goodness for the sun.  If the rain came again, I would of suggested packing it in and trying again some other weekend.  After a walk to scout a fishing spot, we did the White Sands Walk (and Scribbly Gums Track) from Greenfield Beach.  We didn’t make the full loop but had a fun adventure walking through the bush to the white sand beaches.
Bayswater Beach
Not good for fishing but good for wave running

Adventure ahead!
I am finding it hard to describe the beaches in Jervis Bay – beautiful, idyllic.  I’ve been to Cape Tribulation, Hawaii, The Caymans, Mexico and Caribbean, and have never seen sand as white.  An added bonus is that most of the beaches were deserted.

Who needs pants when the beach is deserted?
Beach play - check.  Now time for lunch!
We had a picnic lunch at Hyams Beach then ice cream in Huskisson village.
Eden doesn't share ice cream
even when one of the cones is not his!
In the afternoon, we tried our hand at fishing however only caught each other and sticks.  It was a good thing we brought sausages!  We used the BBQ’s at the creek and roasted marshmallows too before turning in for the evening.

Day 3: Paradise Found
Time to pack down!  While the kids were at the campsite playground, I got the car packed up as cleanly as possible J (yuck, mud)
Campsite soccer
Mid-morning we piled into the car for one more stop before driving home: Booderee National Park.  One of my lovely Mama friends had visited previously and said not to miss Murray’s Beach.  Unfortunately the rain had returned so with our raincoats and umbrellas we hiked in.
Murrays Beach Track
From the bush, we walked less than 10 minutes to PARADISE FOUND.  Our jaws dropped and the kids immediately ran off.  The sand was white as snow and the water, turquoise.  As they ran up and down the deserted beach, I ran back to the car to grab our swim suits and toys.  By the time I had returned the sun was out!  We went for a swim – the water was warm and full of fish (not to MissE’s liking) – and just soaked in the beauty of Murrays Beach.  I am still in awe of it!

Deserted

Finally, it was time to return home.  We stopped in Berry for lunch and a donut (Berry is one of my absolute favourite little towns in Australia, and not just for the world famous donuts).  I had to try a locally sourced alpaca burger from Berry Hotel.  Alpacas are cute and delicious!

Home Sweet Home
Well, back to the grind of mobile phone and internet access and loads of muddy laundry to do!  One of the best things about our 3 day camping trip was unplugging, and getting the kids dirty!  It was a great 1st camping trip for the Two E’s… we are looking forward to going again, with some new camping equipment gained (ahem, a tent where we can stand and air mattresses for me and Mr H!  Ouch!  My back!)

*MrH and I haven’t been camping since our honeymoon (9 years ago!).  We camped for 10 days with Wagon Trails African Adventure Holidays (unfortunately no longer adventuring).  We traveled in the world’s most uncomfortable kombi van and camped in a little 2-man tent that we pitched every night across Bostwana and the Okavango Delta.  We braved the threat of rhinos (never mind the campsite was located down the road from a prison, but that they had put up fencing after a hippo ran through camp the week before) and elephants using the tree marker where our toilet (read: hole) was as a scratching post.  So yes, after 10 straight days we wanted a break from camping... 9 years to be exact!  Now that I am writing about this, I think I might do a #TBT (throw-back Thursday) post on it J  Watch this space.
